Fume Fx Explosions (CGI Explosions)

Hi Guys,

For any of you that don't know what Fume Fx is, its basically a plugin for 3DS Max that allows you to make really realistic and detailed Explosions, Smoke, Fire and anything related. Its not too hard to learn and it is some what technical but somewhat artistic as well. Theres a lot of tutorials out there (check out Allan Mckay and Andrew Kramer, for good tutorials). Fume FX has been used in many films such as Ghost Rider (2007), Red Tails (2012) and Sucker Punch (2011)

Its an expensive plugin but if your using it Non Commercially and just to learn well then there's a few options for the you can obtain a Student License from a place like Studica.

Anyway today I decided to make two explosions nothing special just something to help improve my skills. This is what I came up with.

The first explosion basically uses to Particle Systems (Particle Flow) inside of 3DS Max, the first system is used to generate the ignition of the fuel IE Creating the fireball. The second is the Smoke Trails which is a Pflow emitter using the Spawn Operator.

The Second explosion is using two of the same Pflow Emitters offset a few frames with on on the Y axis and one on the X axis to give the explosion some nice shape. The Sim is then affected by some turbulence force which gives the smoke some nice detail.

Here is a newer explosion simulating a 500lbs bomb explosion.
